Recreation Buildings

The Huron Valley Girl Scouts desperately needed to upgrade their facilities at their largest campsite, Camp Linden. Attracting young girls to a “rustic camping experience” was becoming increasingly difficult, so it was decided to build a new Troop House to provide a more modern, updated, barrier-free alternative to rustic camping. Our design concept was to build a platform elevated off the natural terrain with access by both stairs and ramps. All the elements of the troop house including six cabins were then accessible from this platform with barrier-free access. This new 9,600 square foot building includes the troop house with a large open space for gathering around a stone fireplace and two full kitchens for two troops to use the facility simultaneously. Flanked around the central “House” are cabins which will accommodate 6, 8 or 12 girls. Modern barrier-free restrooms with showers are provided for the cabins as well as general camp use. The design also provides a roofed, outdoor rain-protected space for gathering on the platform around an exterior fireplace. In addition, the basement of the troop house provides additional craft and meeting space as well as space for a storm shelter.
